Founded May 11, 1963
HISTORY OF DELTA CHAPTER
It has been an era of vast change since our oldest member started teaching in 1908. We have seen the changes in a way of life as well as education. The change from horse and buggy to modern automobiles, mimeograph machines to color copy machines, small one room rural schools to consolidated union district schools and contracts containing the non-marriage clause to negotiated contracts containing fringe benefits.
On May 11, 1963 Delta Chapter was born in Woodstock in the old Woodstock Inn. Twenty four members who had previously belonged to the parent Alpha Lambda State Organization elected to be charter members of the new chapter. They were Faith Linsley, Stella Brooks, Rachael Dix, Elizabeth White, Ruth McGill, Dr. Dorothy Collins Miller, Hope Kjellerup, Priscilla Bedell, Ruby Thornley, Marjorie Wooster Woodbury, Mary Herrick. Dr. Karlene Russell, Florence Briggs, Mary Naylor, Virginia Brown, Norma Bailey, Gertrude Sinclair, Jennie Donaldson, Jean Watson, Frances Kiellly, Rosemary Russo, Aline Ward and Alice Fifield. Added to these 24 were seven new initiates: Charlotte Merriman, Ruth Damon, Louise Hutchinson, Katherine Kerr, Emma Sargent, Virginia Smith and Shirley Aitchison.
The first meeting of the new chapter was held in September, 1963 in Barre, at the home of Elizabeth White. Priscilla Bedell was elected president by the fifteen members in attendance.
The membership has grown from a charter group of thirty one educators in 1963 to 49 active and reserve members in 2005. Delta chapter holds five meetings a year. These meetings are held at local area restaurants and include a business meeting, meal and program.
A highlight of Delta Chapter is in the field of scholarship. Money is available to members to further their education or to work toward an advanced degree. Delta Chapter has set up a scholarship fund in honor of two of its members.

Delta Chapter Traditions
Rachael Dix and Agnes Shaw made and presented to Delta Chapter a red satin, gold embroidered scarf to be used in initiation ceremonies. It was first used in April, 1973.
In April 1974, the Chapter voted to buy initiation paraphernalia, which included brass candlesticks, a tray and brass bowl. The bowl would not only be used an installation ceremonies but also as a memorial for deceased members. Florence Briggs was the first to have her name inscribed on it.
Norma Bailey and Gertrude Sinclair presented a red leather Bible and in November, 1974, five gold robes were added, thus completing initiation and ceremonial equipment for meetings.
The Delta Crest and Key were first displayed at the Chapter meeting at the Barre Universalist Church in February 1976. The symbols on the crest were cut from colored felt and mounted on a white cloth background. The key was also make of colored felt and mounted on stiff white cardboard for easy display. These have been used at initiation ceremonies. Evelyn Springstead and Agnes Shaw made the crest and key.

Our Suffering Brave: Waitsfield Boys and Men in the Civil Warby Alice May Evans
163 boys and men from Waitsfield, Vermont joined the Union Army and fought in the Civil War. Their individual stories of bravery as well as suffering-from wounds, sickness, and/or deprivation during imprisonment-tell quite a story of the fight to save the United States. Some made it home, others did not. They should not be forgotten.

Subject: Alice Evans' Civil War book FINALLY is published!
Although my Book Launch celebration has been advertised via The Valley Reporter, the Front Porch Forum and flyers posted in storefronts and libraries locally, you may not have seen those postings. That's why I'm circulating this "fact sheet" to friends I think may be interested. If you can, join my party (catered apps, a cash bar, and a big cake!) on Wednesday, September 20, between 3 and 7 P.M. at Lawson's Finest...taproom inside. If weather permits, you'll be able to carry your food & beverage onto the patio immediately outside the area where we'll have reserved seating Whether indoors or out, you can meet friends and preview the book. Local author and TV interview host Kathy Mehuron will M.C., beginning around 4:15 P.M. Should you wish to purchase a copy of Our Suffering Brave [no obligation to do so!], it's priced at $29.99. Cash or personal check only. There also will be information about buying the book online or through any Vermont independent book store. I'd very much enjoy seeing you there! Alice

Delta Chapter-DKG Vermont State Spring Convention-April 30, 2023
This has been a challenging year for Delta Chapter. Our goal was to bring back current members to meetings and active membership. We only have about 14 active members. Some of our key members suffered major health issues which further weakened our chapter. Some projects had to be put on hold.
We had a magical October meeting with a harvest lunch featuring a charcuterie board symbolizing our theme - Moving Forward Together. Lian Brehm (Enrichment Scholarship recipient) presented a program about her textile trip to Chiapas, Mexico.
The January winter meeting featured our scholarship winner Carrie McKinstry who is attending St. Michael's College. She also received a collegiate membership
We had a kick off to reading the Vermont Humanities Book - The Most Costly Journey (Stories of Migrant Farmworkers in Vermont) and a legislative preview of the upcoming session. Our Winter award collection of beautiful items was donated to the Montpelier Food Bank for distribution.
We had our largest membership attendance at the April meeting which featured a meal at a local bakery. Unfortunately the weather was bad and our program was cancelled
Two Delta members are nominated for state offices - Teer Best for Recording Secretary and Suzie Klinefelter for Nominating Committee.
There will be two more meetings this year - a spring/summer tea and a pot luck picnic. We will continue to Move Forward Together in the next year.

Delta Chapter Report April 2022
The Year of ZOOM
Submitted by: Cassie Major
In a year of many challenges, much like our teachers in the classroom, Delta Chapter has tried our best to hold our chapter meetings despite canceling of venues, retiring officers, learning new technology skills, changing speakers and altering programs. We’ve been grateful for the zoom skills shared by Terri Vest and appreciative of the few meetings we’ve been able to hold in person.
Last May, several of us attended the first state zoom convention conducted by the Epsilon chapter. What an excellent job Michelle and committee did shepherding us through the bylaw changes and presenting our keynote speaker, Dr. Linda Ulrich reminding us “Happiness Is An Option”.
We were able to meet in the fall for an autumn pot luck brunch at Sandy Well’s house where we wrapped full size candy bars with an inspirational message thanking teachers for their continued “sweet” dedication in these covid challenging times.
January began the year with our continuing adventures in Zoom meetings. Terri Vest arranged an excellent guest speaker, Jeff Fannon, the executive director of the Vermont NEA, to discuss the work of a state committee writing a bill for the legislature to consider to correct issues with the teachers’ and public employees’ pension plan. We hope the challenges that have been mounting for years will be on the way to being solved. Everyone was encouraged to continue.
Our remembering others efforts by sending Valentines with words of encouragement to teachers they know. A basket full of Valentine wrapped candy bars was presented to educators at Barre Town Middle & Elementary School.
In April, we had a delicious dinner at Delicate Decadence in Barre. The new slate of officers was presented and will be voted on at our May Spring Tea. Much discussion was held answering the two surveys requesting responses concerning the state DKG current website and privacy issues.
We are looking forward to many upcoming activities, hopefully in person, including the state DKG Spring Convention in Burlington, our chapter annual tea at the Berlin Church in May, and our summer picnic in August with the book discussion of The Vermont Humanities Council book of the year “We Contain Multitudes” by Sarah Henstra along with our annual sharing of books we have enjoyed reading this past year.
Finally, we were quite saddened recently to hear of the passing of one of oldest longtime chapter members, Ernestine Genini. Former students paid tribute on Facebook to her many years teaching French at Spaulding High School and Brook Street School. “She always, ALWAYS had a smile for each of us.” “She was quite a lady!! So strong and always positive.” “She will be missed by many.” Rest in peace, Ernestine

DELTA Chapter Mid-Winter Report
February 5, 2022
Chapter President Cassie Major
Here we go again… back to having meetings on zoom! Happy New Year everyone!
In the midst of trying to figure out how we could safely have our January meeting followed by dinner
in a new church venue, Cassie took a pole to see how many would feel comfortable with an in person
meeting. Sadly, given the concerns for once again rising covid numbers, we decided it best to resort
once again to a zoom meeting. Twas nice to see happy faces!
The chapter nominating committee has been hard at work and was able to present a fine new slate of
officers. They are: Sandra Wells, President; Lian Brehm, Vice President; Grace Sweet, Recording Secretary;
Betty Philips, Corresponding Secretary; and Erin Carter, Treasurer. We have decided to eliminate
the second Vice President position. Thanks to the committee and all who have stepped up to lead.
Pat Lane lead us in a discussion of our Remembering Others projects. Several chapters around the state
are participating in Winter Warmth projects gathering hats and mittens for schools. Sandy will donate
some mittens to St. Monica’s school in Barre and take a photo. To continue our sweet teacher appreciation
project we started last fall, Cassie has 60 candy bars that will be wrapped with a DKG thank you
banner and taken to Barre Town School for Valentine’s Day.
In conjunction with the Vermont Humanities “Vermont Reads” project, we have 12 copies of the 2021
book “We Contain Multitudes”. Copies will be distributed and shared with members for a book discussion
later this summer.
Terri Vest arranged for Jeff Gannon, VTNEA Executive Director, to be our guest speaker. He spoke in
great detail about how the task force created by Act 75 worked hard all summer on a Retirement Package
Deal. Hopefully, the legislature will see the wisdom in their efforts and pass their proposal to make
repairs to the state employees pension plan. Many were glad to hear no changes will be made on the
plans of current retirees. Jeff was very informative. Grace was able to summarize his points quite well
in our minutes if anyone would like more information. We also discussed briefly the privatization of
our health care now called Blue Advantage which will save the state somewhere between $15 - $17
million dollars.
We hope our April 6th meeting can be in person at the Delicate Decadence new shop in Barre.
We look forward to our in person time together more than zoom sessions, of course, but hope our coming year
sees more of the former than

Valentine’s Day Project
One of the state wide projects for DeltaKappaVermont this year is celebrating teachers in our school districts on Valentine's Day. Trifold brochures were made for each chapter to distribute with their treats on Valentine’s Day. Each chapter are bringing brochures, an invitation to a meeting, and treats to a school.
Here is the Delta Valentine Day Appreciation Display at Thatcher Brook Elementary School in Waterbury. Grace Sweet is the one in charge of this great display. Many thanks to our Delta EEC group, Grace Sweet, Cassie Major, Pat Lane, Amy Flannery and Sandy Wells.
