Winter Report-January 2024
Gamma
President Lisa Boerner
Over the first half of the year, Gamma has had 3 meetings. We learned about the Wonderfeet Museum and toured it’s new location. We have members who bring their grandchildren there. We have a member who is a big part of this vital organization in Rutland.
In October we met at the Pittsford Proctor Country Club where we learned about Tatum’s Totes, an organization that helps children in foster care to have the necessities they need. This organization has helped countless children to have what they need as they move into foster care situations.
In November, we met at Mill River High School and heard from Cassie Horner, Rutland Magazine Editor and author. She discussed what it takes to run the Rutland Magazine and also shared insights to her books.
Coming up in our second half of the Gamma year we will learn more about the Reinbow Therapeutic Riding Center and how they help children and adults to overcome challenges through horse therapy. We will also hear from new and veteran principals and hear what they have to share about past and current topics in schools. We will finish our year out by learning about banned books. Gamma is also gearing up for our annual Soup Bowls for Hunger which will be held in person in April. This is a community event that helps raise funds for community food shelves.

September 26, 2023 Meeting
Wonderfeet Kids Museum
Rutland, VT
Paula Townsend, Gamma Member and Educational Instructor at the Wonderfeet Kids Museum introduced Danielle Monroe, Executive Director at the museum to start the meeting. Danielle gave a brief history of the museum and described all the recent changes in location and the availability of space to expand their wonderful hands-on learning exhibits for children. This museum has a mission "to foster curiosity and exploration, inspire creativity and ignite the imagination of every child through the power of play." Danielle gave us an engaging, informative, passionate tour of the facility and exhibits. There is an amazing graphic artist who has incorporated so many of Rutland's landmarks into the design of the different play/learning areas and decorative wall art- The Vermont State Fair, The Rutland train station, Bardwell House, the band stand, the farmer's market, farming, the credit union, and Casella's Recycling. There are more play/learning areas that are in the development process. This was a wonderful program to start Gamma Chapter's fall meeting. A business meeting followed where committees gave updates and reports.
Reminder that Jan Danziger's Art Day is on Saturday, October 28, 2023.

Program: Author- J.Peter Cobb
Marcia Barron, Gamma Chapter member introduced a classmate of hers who has written and published a book of fiction based on his career in home health care. J. Peter Cobb talked to the group about writing and his book -To Alice.
website: jpetercobb.com
"The novel is about the dignity and grace of simple care – – a bed bath, companionship, meals preparation, wound dressing, house cleaning, toenail clipping. For many frail, elderly, and homebound patients, assistance with these simple tasks can make the difference between living in their own homes or living in a nursing home. The novel also deals with boundary issues between a patient and a caregiver. The boundary between providing professional, compassionate care and getting too involved with a patient is often blurred, especially for home care and hospice aides who work with their patients week after week for months, sometimes for years.
The protagonist, Alice Hammond, is a home health and hospice aide for the Providence, Vermont Visiting Nurse Association. Her patients are a logger who suffered a terrible accident that left him homebound, a woman on hospice whose young daughter and husband are having a difficult time dealing with her death, a feisty one-hundred-year-old woman who resists her son’s attempts to move her to a nursing home, a former ballroom dance champion who hadn’t danced since his wife died but is dancing again at age ninety, a young man who uses a wheelchair, who finds love for the first time, and a man whose life fell apart when his wife left him thirty years ago."

Gamma Chapter Report- April 30. 2023
Gamma has been hard at work! Our EEC group and Wendy Savery, our 1st Vice President, sent out cards to active teachers in our chapter to show appreciation as we moved into the winter months. That group is also working on the Winter Warmth Project by making and donating hats, mittens, gloves and socks to the Winter Warmth Project. Many wonderful hats, scarfs, mittens and coats were donated to BROC. It was overwhelming how many items were collected at my front door.
Our 2nd Vice President, Jennifer Scott has also been hard at work through her work with the Orientation meeting with 7 new Gamma members! We will induct them into DKG in May of this year.
The first half of our year was filled with beautiful meetings with meaningful fellowship. Our first meeting was at the Methodist Church in Rutland and we learned about the Companions and Wholeness group who are feeding those who are hungry in Rutland. We also inducted 7 new members! Our October meeting was held among the beautiful fall background at the Proctor Pittsford Country Club where we learned about what Rutland Recreation has to offer our area. Our November meeting was held at the Rutland Free Library in the Fox room. We had to pivot and show flexibility at this meeting. We met in break out groups talking and learning about Gamma’s initiatives including EEC, Soup Bowls, Future Educator Awards and Passion Projects. This allowed sisters to learn more about these fabulous initiatives!
Gamma continues to work together to help the community! Instead of a formal meeting, Gamma had our annual Soup Bowls for Hunger Event. This was a drive-through style fundraiser benefiting food shelves in Rutland County and surrounding areas. When you bought a ticket you received a handmaid bowl, soup of your choice, roll and dessert. Many Gamma members came together to make this another successful event!
Our March meeting was held at the Dollhouse at the Stafford Technical Center. Our members were flexible as always needing to quickly figure out dinner as Covid struck the chefs at the Stafford Technical Center. We had a tour of the classes led by Gamma members.
Our final meeting for this year is in May. This meeting will be held in Wallingford where we will induct 7 new members to Gamma! We will also hear from author Peter Cobb.
Gamma members will begin meeting in June to plan our 2023-2024 meetings.

Gamma Chapter Report - April 19, 2022
Paula Townsend
Here are the three highlights from the last two months:
- Gamma”s Soup Bowls for Hunger Event was a great success. This year’s event was held as a drive-through. Orders were taken on line and then picked up at Rutland High School. The Committee was a combination of Gamma volunteers and Rutland High Students. Local restaurants donated soups and desserts- Two hundred and fifty bowls were sold, all proceeds went to local community cupboards. Kudos to everyone who volunteered their time and effort and a thank you to the community for its support!
- The March meeting was held at the Godnick Adult Community Center. The director, April Cioffi, gave a demonstration of Tai Chi, a noncompetitive, self -paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. This program is one of the many that are offered at the center.
- May’s meeting was at the Rutland Free Library. The guest speaker was Dr. Peter HogenKamp, a local physician and author. He gave an entertaining talk on his writing process. The nomination committee chair Maggie Rafter shared the names for the slate of officers for the 2022-24 biennium. We will vote at the May meeting. A lovely Induction ceremony was held for our newest members. Gamma has added five new members, looking forward to getting to know these new members.

He told the members the information is 22 times more memorable in narrative form. Told by his adviser his senior year in college he was too immature to attend medical school he went to Salisbury, Austria to teach chemistry for three years. He syays that forative experience let him grow from a flat superficial two dimensional person to a 3 dimensional person who loved art, travel, language. He believes that teachers strongly influence their students by just being the people they are. He emphasized that the connection to and with people and how you feel about them is what makes us hopeful. Robert Browning- "Without love, earth is a tomb"

Shutter Arts Project
Gamma Chapter members were invited to come together for afternoon to turn old vinyl shutters into art decorations. Five members of Gamma Chapter did accept the invitation. A few others were unable to attend but will complete a shutter art work at home. Some of the shutters were sprayed with Krylon Fusion Spray Paint prior to our meeting to work on the art work to help save drying time. Each member had their own unique ideas on how to use these shutters. The weather was very nice which allowed for social distancing in an outside setting at Marcia Barron's house.
