Two Eta chapter members, Hayley Grossman and Lisa Flynn worked with Marilyn Grunewald and had support from Debbie LeBlanc, the Northeast Regional Program Director to write a grant that would focus on food insecurity in the Bennington Community.
Their project was supported by the schools, the Public Access TV Station, a community venue, the superintendent’s office, the Abbey food Service and the local DKG Chapter, Eta, with much enthusiasm. We will hear if we have received the grant by April 30.
Below, please find the program description submitted with the grant.
“The project will support PreK-12 Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union (SVSU) students and their families. It consists of five elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and one Technical Center with approximately 3,000 students. The focus of the "Cook for the Community" project is to teach families how to purchase and use ingredients needed for healthy meal preparation. During the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year the Culinary Arts and Video Production students at the Southwest Technical Center (SW Tech) in Bennington, VT will create videos on healthy meal preparation and nutrition. In person and videotaped cooking classes will be offered by the Culinary Arts students for K-12 families. The work done during 2021-2022 will lay the groundwork for the coming school year and the future. The funds we are requesting will be used during the next school year for the "Cook for the Community” project .
At the beginning of the academic school year 2022-2023, 40 families will have the opportunity to participate in the "Cook for the Community" program. The families will participate in person, on Zoom or they can choose to view the videos prepared by the SW Tech students. After attending demonstrations and classes, students and their families will have the opportunity to practice their skills at home or in person. Families will each receive a reusable shopping bag containing the recipe, the ingredients, the utensils to prepare a meal and a chance to win a small cooking appliance such as an air fryer or crockpot for their home. “
Hayley Grossman. and Marilyn Grunewald Marilyn Grunewald being thanked for her support by Donna Stone of ETA.
